Why are children in detention often so badly treated?
Often when children are in trouble with the law, they are no longer regarded as children and are treated as adults.
It is thought that up to one million children are in detention. It is evident that widespread violent abuse is perpetrated on these children. Children suffer physical and sexual abuse and extrajudicial killings at the hands of adult inmates or the authorities. They are often kept indefinitely and in very unsanitary conditions.
The key factors that that seem to facilitate violence against children in the justice system are impunity and lack of accountability by law enforcement officers responsible for the violence.
